How can I get my world under the worlds area. So that I can work on it and possibly get advice on it?

Another excellent question, and as it turns out, we had a policy, but never posted it, so there was no way to know.

Posted it here:

Thanks, always good to fill a hole.

What do the shields or axes under a person's name indicate?  Post tallies of some kind?  If so, how does that differ from the ranking title?

Yes, another post tally (I suppose)

There are different Knight Ranks:
The first get one axe, the second two, ...

The same with the shields:
Page, Herald, Squire.
(Lurkers: No post, no shield - don't need to protect themself from bashing :

Q: Is there any minimum number of players required to start a game thread?  I'm actually looking to GM for a single player (a solo adventure, I guess you could say).  I guess we could do it via email, but I prefer having the threads of an internet message board.  I'd hate to feel that we were wasting the board's resources, though.
No big deal, just let me know.

Not to mention there are a lot of games that, at one time or another to one degree or another, are effectively several solo games running concurrently in the same area.

Part of the beauty of PbP is that you don't have to keep the party together to keep the game going.
Eye of newt and toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog.
Adder’s fork and blind-worm’s sting, lizard’s leg and owlet’s wing.
   - Traditional physical spell components
You put your left foot in, you put your left foot out...
  - Traditional somatic spell components
Ooo Eee Ooo Aaa Aaa, Ting Tang Walla Walla Bing Bang.
   - Traditional verbal spell components
Take the lime and the coconut, and drink them both together.
  - Traditional potion formula

Cool!
So, if I have my player, then I don't need to get up a recruitment thread - do I just PM a moderator about setting up a board for us?

Just throw me a PM with:

Game Name (System)
Blurb about game

and I'll set you up, though it might be later this evening, heading to a bar with people from work.

"Invitational" games are fine, you're more traffic on the site, and you or your player may decide to try one of the other games while you're here. . . .so no worries.

Hey, good to see you here!
Right now, just figuring out options.  It's basically an old pal of mine, we grew up playing D&D in the early 80s, are talking about trying to do something PbP style.  Not sure if it'll get off the ground, or exactly what we'll play.  We did used to play Marvel, if we decide to go that direction, I'll let you know!

I dont think you can directly. You can post files under 200kb to the board and they can download them.

The way around that is PM the member for their email address and send it that way.

You can post files into posts under 200k, or upload larger files into the download area (button just above the donation ad on the top of the left bar) for them to grab, or exchange e-mails in PM, then exchange files directly.

Hahah, thanks guys. I apologize but I don't know much about your site, though I've been aware of it, I've really just never been here or around - I know it was RPGRM or something like that, and it had/has good PbP resources and forums and such and been around quite a good while, so what has RR been up to lately?  What is your main features and such here?

Well, there's a general description of us on the front page:

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php

We normally point noobs to the helpfully titled "Start Here"

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?topic=1698.0

Which explains a lot of what we do and how to join in on things.

The rest of that board is full of "How to. . ." help:

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=105.0

Mostly we host games on "The Gaming Table":

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=109.0

We currently have 32 games running, in an eclectic mix of systems. We don't allow D20 here, to allow other games to flourish. We're not anti-d20, just d20-free. It's a network effect thing, if you're on a board where non-d20 games are 1% of the recruits, they tend to get buried and players/GMs just don't make contact. As you can see, here it's possible for games like Aftermath or Pendragon to get a following.

We've been experimenting with some board games on "The Sand Table"

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=280.0

We recruit people for "The Gaming Table" RPGs here

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=58.0

and for "Sand Table" board games here

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=284.0

People can post requests on "I Want to Play" in hopes of gathering a crew of like minded people and inspire a GM to run something

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=340.0

And we have a downloads area of free stuff

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?action=tpmod;dl

Beyond that we have the usual general discussions going on, ranging from RPG Related. . .

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=86.0
http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=64.0
http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=93.0

...to more general talk

http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=61.0
http://www.realroleplaying.com/rmsmf/index.php?board=62.0

Any questions?

Well... that is certainly quite the schpiel.  That should definitely be a FAQ if it isn't already.  I was looking around at the different threads, it's a nice setup here, I had no idea you had that many games going though - it is deceptive just how many people can fit into a forum when they're well behaved!
I've been a mod/admin on more than one board, and this is the LEAST moderation work of any board, minus the work anyone puts into deleting and banning spambots.

I want to put some setting materials up for players (or potential players), including a map (which is well over 200K). I'm wondering about the best way to do this. Would it go in the "Active Games Area" of the Downloads? I assume the 200K limit doesn't apply to the downloads area, just posts? Maybe I should get a web site, but I can't afford to pay for one. Is there any decent free hosting out there that could be used for RPG world information.
I'm sorry, but I fumbled my "think of clever signature" roll.

If it's just an image of a map, there are plenty of hosts out for stuff like that. (Suggestions anyone)

The download area will hold maps, or any other files.

How big is this map?

Over a MB in its full glory, but I can get it down to about 300K and still have it legible (although it starts looking less pretty). It's actually already on the Cartographer's Guild, but since you have to join to see the maps there, that's not ideal.

Often, on this site, I "save as" to jpeg and shrink/de-rez the image to make it work.

300k is no problem in the DL area (I was worried about a giant, super hires 50mb map.) and that way you can easy link to it no problem.

Dumb question - is the Sand Table just a place to find opponents for Vassal or is there something else to it?

I've known about Vassal for awhile, just never played on it, so I don't have a problem for it, the term Sand Table is just throwing me for a loop.

Thanks.
