Is there anyway to increase the number of background options? Guild member, etc?

The BOs are a function of the  social status roll.  What specifically are you looking to achieve?

No those are fixed and the 2 and 6 are not re-rolled.  those numbers are then used on the potential table in character law.  If you want I can generate the potentials for you.  If you want you can roll new stats all the way around and we will just shelf this set.

I was looking to be a Duelist for a nobleman. A member of the court. I just don't see them hiring a street urchin.

I can see several ways to achieve this.  One is that a nobleman willing to hire someone else to handle his affairs of honor, probably doesn't have much to start with and would not necessarily be looking to hire a nobleman.  Alternately, you may be of noble birth but not recognized by your noble parent therefore creating you social situation.  If you are from outside of the city you could simply claim noble birth.

I can see several way in which to play of these options.  However, if you insist on a noble birth as per the chart, you would need to raise up 5 social levels to be a lesser noble.  To each courtier you would need to climb another 3 social levels.  I will grant a +10 to your roll for each social level that I will then apply to a penalty/trait or malus table to determine the cost(s) of achieving your noble status    For example lesser noble shifts the roll 50 in a less desirable direction while Lesser Courtier shifts it 80 in that direction.   Turns out Quasimodo was of noble birth!

That being said, please understand that wile noble birth does hold some import in the City, there social rank if determined by far more.  Honor, reputation, and actions carry weight as well, but overwhelmingly the major factors are wealth and power and not necessarily in that order.  Thus, a rich merchant can be well ahead of a down on his luck noble with respect to social status.  The guild master of the beggars guild will hold ore sway socially than most lesser nobles due to his power base.  While it is an aspect of the game, do not presume that it has an overriding aspect.

Let me know if you want the roll on the penalty chart and I will try to find something appropriate.

I don't know what chart it will be yet, I wasn't going to look for one if you weren't interested.  I am hoping to find one that would be reflective of penalties to characters I think there might have been some in Companions or HARP.  If I can't find what I am looking for there I might have to resort to D&D.  The point is that there would be some penalty applied, but that you could achieve the noble status you seek.

There are some negative background options listed in the companions.

From RC I, A couple I wouldn't mind playing:
Superstitious
Multiple Personalities

From RC IV, there is a table you could roll on pg.  41

From a Rolemaster database, I don't remember where I got the list, but it contains background options from all supplements.
Never refuse a 1v1 challenge
Never attack unless you/friend is attacked first (+25 DB yo first attack)
Servant of a demon
Cannot refuse plea of help +20 to all actions
Have a body part transformed to a demon.
Hunted by Kami
Phobia

I'd much rather pick one than roll randomly.

Please let me know if you want to take a -80 (Courtier) or a -50 (noble) and I will pick the penalty for increasing your social status.

The table uses these designations

Prince 1st
Prince Latter
Cousin Royal
Courtier 1st
Courtier Latter
Noble 1st
Noble Latter
Lesser Noble
Religious/Academic
Merchant
Guild/Tradesman
Agrarian/Serf
Laborer
Criminal
Beggar
Slave
Outcast

The 1st designation means the first born (due the inheritance, if any) while latter refers to all others.

Courtiers are just below the royal family in social standing the nobles with the most power, while lesser nobles are those of noble birth but with not much else to add to their power.  Thus, climbing from laborer to lesser noble would not incur as much penalty as going all the way into the inner circles of the kingdom.  I am assuming that you would be a latter courtier of that was the direction you wish to head.

Welcome to the aristocracy--all for the small price of an addiction.  You may choose alcoholism or whats behind door number 2 (drug of my choice).  Additionally you gain another 3 background options now a total of 5 and you starting cash goes from 1d100 CP to 1D100-25 SP  you also gain 2 ancestry rolls on a d100 if you desire (typically used for the honor system but do add to your background either way).
