** While you might be able to keep up at first, you firmly believe this thoroughbred of a horse will outdistance you, as you can’t fly vast distances without resting.

Skrawk will follow for a few minutes, but if the horse starts pulling away, he'll concede and head back to Dayn.

Following the man on the horse, you come to where the rest of your party was waiting, while the old man just rides by them as if they weren’t there, you however stop in mid-flight as you see your comrades in bitter battle with a large, albeit ancient, Roc (you know what these creatures are).

Actions?

"Crap" Skrawk thinks.  Assuming he doesn't know anything special about Rocs (and I can't imagine why he would), he takes out his crossbow and fires (assuming he's within range; otherwise he'll close to fire).  If you need a roll for attacking, it's"

Rolled 1d100+44 : 35 + 44, total 79

Duh!  ;-}  Although its flying capability seems a little suboptimal right now...

** it has not spotted you, so get as close as you want.

PB Range 25’
0-25’. (+25)
26-75’ (0)
76-125’. (-10)
126-175’. (-20)
176-225’ (-30)
226-275’ (-40)

You are about 300’ out right now. (So -50)

** Tell me how close you want to get and I’ll have you roll again.

Keep in mind you can only have one modifier to your dice roll. Take your bonus and add/subtract the range modifier (you have to do the math) and then apply.

** you get to 50’ away, and the Roc still hasn’t noticed you.

You do know that Terra and Ammon have noticed you and are keeping the beast busy.

Do you want to chance getting to point blank, or let it fly from here?

Shoot from 50' away.  Skrawk isn't willing to risk being too close to a Roc.

** okay, you rolled a 79.  You get +20 for rear, +20 for surprise, -10 for being a small attack size.

Total 109

Since Lorelei has been snatched, Skrawk will close on the Roc. He'll attempt to stay below the Roc's flightline, in case Lorelei is dropped.  Skrawk doesn't have much hope to catch Lorelei if that's what happens, and even less hope that both would survive such a catch, but hey...

** yes, the higher the Roc climbs, the less likely you think either of you would survive.

Height of Fall     Critical Size
1’ – 20’                     Tiny
21’ – 50’                   Small
51’ – 100’                 Medium
101’ -200’                 Large
201’+                       Huge

I’d give you a chance to catch her, but her weight alone would drag you down until you both hit the ground. Your body is not designed for weight.

Btw, a medium crit is a straight roll. Each degree you vary from that give a -+/- 10 to your roll.

The Roc continues to climb, he doesn’t seem bothered by the extra weight.

Is there a point where you stop trying?

Stop trying what?

… to follow?  No.  Unless the Roc is steadily pulling away, Skrawk wants to keep it in sight.  Maybe it will land while Skrawk can still see it, even if it's far off.
… to position Skrawk to catch a hypothetically-falling Lorelei?  Almost immediately.  The higher the Roc goes, the more pointless such an attempt would be.

Note that Skrawk would not attack the Roc; he doesn't want to risk it dropping Lorelei.  Skrawk is also doing the best he can to note the way back to the camp, so that if/when Lorelei is placed on solid ground, Skrawk can attempt a rescue and can guide Lorelei back to the rest of the party.  His awesome skill in Navigation (a full +29 !) suggests that things like noting the current angle of the sun (for direction), noting any major landmarks, and counting wing beats (for a rough gauge of distance) might prove useful.

Look at page 101 (Crushing Crit), you would have an open ended roll at +10 to save Lorelei. She would get a roll at +20 if you don’t try to catch her.

Please give us two perception rolls, one for the rift and one for the figure, and then a Lore- Local Region roll as well. They are all easy rolls, so give yourself an additional +20 to your roll. Remember they only allow one modifier, so you have to do the math for the bonuses yourself.

To put each roll in the same dialogue you have to put a [“br”] at the end of the line. Don’t use quotes.
