A History of A Dark Age

According to myth, the World was created by a power extra-planar entity known as Akzumoth (a Demiurge) to spite the ancient and benevolent Overgod. Akzumoth’s creation, however, was imperfect and flawed.  The World was filled with strange and half-formed creatures. There are extreme seasons of unpredictable duration and severity. Seasons can last months or years with elementals fighting for supremacy.

For thousands of years, the mortal races worshiped Akzumoth and his proxy-gods, known as the Eidolons. Nations formed and grew, as did vast tribes and expansive religions.

Most numerous of the mortal races is man, who settled in all corners of Akzumoth’s creation. Of the Fey Spirits, kingdoms of forest spirits (elves) and earthen spirits (dwarfs) spread across the world. In the wilds live the races of dires, centaurs and fauns, feral creatures created by Ahzumoth with the essence of both man and beast.

During the Time of Tribulations, the world was shaken as the lands were ripped asunder and the oceans swelled. The temples to Akzumoth and his Eidolons crumbled; the gods no longer answered the prayers of the faithful. Some believed that Akzumoth and the Eidolons are dead, others that the gods had forsaken the World because mortals had grown prideful and were full of sin. Whatever the cause, the gods were silent and hidden from mortals.

The World was thrust into chaos. A millennia after the Death of the Gods, mortals live in a dark age of war, ignorance and fear. Petty kings and warlords rule the lands, fighting and killing for territory and spoil. Magic works through hard work and dark deeds, but is chaotic and unpredictable.

In this dark age, new deities have appeared and sent their prophets among the people. Known as the Empyreans, these strange powers from other realities each demand exclusive worship from their followers. Unlike Akzumoth and the Eidolons, the Empyreans may be invoked and appear to their faithful, contributing to the religious zeal of mortals.
