For those of us who have never played, what factions tend to be set up the best at the beginning.

I find, on average, that Germany and Austria, due to their central positioning, often get slammed from all directions.

That is only generally true, on average, over many games. . .too much depends on the alliances and deals made.

I have seen Germany and Austria make a deal to leave each other alone.
Germany makes a deal with England to crush france.
Austria makes a deal with italy to go after Turkey.

It all depends on how the dealmaking goes, and how much people keep deals, especially in the first few rounds.

England, russia and turkey have the best apparent defensive positions, in "corners" so to speak, but while they don't have to watch their backs, most of the supply centers are over in the mess where germany, austria, italy, and france are all piled up on each other.

So defensively, those three nations have an easier time, especially in the beginning, but in exchange they have to stretch out further to get a win, and all their new built units have to cross the whole board to get into combat, since their "Home" supply centers are in the corners.

I'll jump if you still need a seventh player. I have no country preference, though if I can make one suggestion... I'd recommend using the Fleet Rome variant. Very simply, Italy starts with a fleet in Rome instead of an army (so two fleets and one army instead of two armies and one fleet). It's a subtle change and doesn't change the rules or flow of the game, but it expands the strategic options available to Italy.

I have no objection to playing the rome fleet variant if everyone is amiable.

Arakish hasn't been online since yesterday, but when he checks in, him + Xanlor makes 7.

If you're for sure in Xanlor, post your preferences in order. I already sent Arakish a PM. . .in which case we are full up at 7 players and ready to get moving on play, probably get the ball rolling tonight.

I would be against the Fleet Rome, especially if I were the Italian Player...

Unless Arakish goes for italy, it looks like you are going to be italy, if you prefer standard over fleet rome, I'm not going to dispute that choice.

So what do you do if someone has the same first choice?

I'll use the order in which people picked their factions to try and give everyone at least their 2nd choice, it blows up if 2 people pick an identical spread, in which case I make them roll off. I've almost never seen it go past 3rd choices (and considering so far we have no doubling if first picks, I doubt we'll go past anyone on their #2 choice)

Sweet, all sorts of fun on the board today (marland's home). Give me your 7 factions ranked from what you want most to least, and I'll get all of the prep out of the way and kick it off.
