How did you find this forum?

The title says it all.

I re-found this forum following the banner ad from ICE.  I had forgotten about the site and that it had added a forum in the last year or so.

Good idea, Sunwolf!! I am dying to know how others found out about rpgRM.net. (To see if all of our voting and advertisments are working, where, etc)

Have some pebbles.  :D

I found this site through ictus. He came to another forum I was at to help me, along with ob1. Once ictus was there, he told me about his site, and the rest is history!!

I know that I am at the right place.  :)

Because I have obtained my MO degree (Master of the Obvious), you apparently only have a BO degree (Bachelor of the Obvious)  :P

OK, let's see...

It was many and many a month ago, back in, oh, 2004.  December 2004.

I was a Moderator on a site called B****** T****.  They claimed to be open to all games, and welcomed input from everyone.

Being a long time Rolemaster player / GM, I had LOTS of ideas and concepts foreign to them... which they loved... but absoloutely HAD to translate everything into D&D.  Oh, they were there for all systems, but it all had to be translated to D&D.  "Hey - that's a great race / item / character class - can you translate it to D&D?"

The games running there were 5 different homebrew D&D games and 3 'freeform' games.

Every month they have a competition, either an assassin competition, or a thief competition, or a mage competition.... <snore>  I won comp after comp, easily, just by quoting from RM books.

They HATED me talking about RM - it terrified them.  All but 2 of the moderators and 2 of the admins were under 21, and would delete threads and posts if they didn't like them - with no warning.
Censorship and fear were the name of the game there.

So, Lady Catreece introduced me to Ictus and ob1knorrb, and I came here.

It was like being reborn :)

I can now say, "D&D SUCKS!" as lous and as much as I want, and my post won't get deleted.
Awesome.

LOL Sorloc, a little frustration? Let it all out, we are all here for you. Let it go.

I got here through the ICE forums. To rpgrm.net at first (as I posted stuff for the vault I got asked to post it at rpgrm.net) some time after that I followed the link in Ictus' signature on the ICE forums.

BTW, Sorloc, I got a few gamers here who think D&D is really a good system. They won't just ignore everything I say about RoleMaster, but defend D&D to the bone. Really annoying, because I know I am right ;)

Well, my coming here was probably the most random compared to all the versions so far. Was it fate guiding me? I don't really know (and don't really believe in fate as such), but I was googling for a forum to play Rolemaster PbP. And boy oh boy I got lucky - I found this place and got hooked!

Most know that I was invited here by a now, M.I.A., "Illucypher"

I dare not go as far as to say that Illucypher and some of the other memebers here are good mates....I have yet to hear both sides of the debate.

He claims that some of those around here a friendly towards him.

Anyway, got the invite, came on over, and have had many a laugh since arriving.

I'm not sure I hate any gaming system, not worth the effort after all.  Now if you were talking campaigns, well that would be a different matter.

I actually like D&D, if for no other reason because I have had a lot of fun with it over the years.  Of course I've had a lot of fun with other systems too.

Just remember, no matter what system, a bad GM can sink a game faster than Jimmy Hoffa in cement shoes.

I think I saw a post from Ictus in the "looking for a game" thread on ICE forums.  Despite despairing at his postings on ICE I though I would give him a chance.  Luckily he has managed to maintain my interest with small brides of sweetmeats and pebbles so far ...

I've never played D&D what's it like?

It kind of depends on which version but briefly:

Unlike HARP or Rolemaster your class (profession) narowly determines what you can do.  Some classes can learn more skills than other depending on their other inherent abilities.

Some of the basic classes (and brief descriptions)
Cleric - can wear armor and cast spells (divine) 2nd line fighter can learn a few skills
Fighter - can wear any armor, use almost any weapon without additional training, front line fighter.
Rogue - can only wear leather armor without penalty, gets sneak attack ability, mediocre fighter, can learn lots of skills (such as detect traps, hide, etc.) the only character allowed to disarm difficult and/or magical traps
Wizard - can not wear any armor without penalty, can't cast Arcane spells that require somatic (gestures) components without a chance of spell failure, few skills, sucks in combat.

Magic is memorize/pray, fire and forget (must re-memorize, etc.).  You can multi-class to get benefits (and some restrictions as well) of another class.

They have Saving throws which are tied to class and level instead of Resistance Rolls tied to skill rank.

Combat ability is tied to class and level rather than skill rank.  Critical in combat do extra hitpoints of damage but nothing else normally.  You can fight just fine until you run out of hitpoints.
