I think Sparkling had a good idea. "Florilegium" has been an SCA resource for many years.

Why does that matter? Because it means that any food references/recipes you find there are unlikely to depend on 1) refrigeration, or 2) international trade in spices.

Pepper traded even, weight for weight, with gold for quite a long time in Europe I believe. The word "salary" comes from Roman Legionnaires being paid in salt.
