Recruiting: Sci-fi BugHunt
« on: November 29, 2008, 09:30:45 PM »
Sci-fi BugHunt (As in Aliens, or Starship Troopers)
This was one of the requests in the "Players Recruiting" thread that i may take up in the new year, and I think I would use the old TSR Bughunters (Amazing Engine System) setting as a base, but not use the actual system itself.
My prefered system would be HARP Sci Fi, hopefully it will be available in print soon, and my preference would be either that the players own a copy or alternately that at least one of the players owns a copy and would be willing to co-gm the portions related to Character Creation and leveling up, and possibly assist in answering rules questions.

So, a small survey.

Are you interested in playing?
Do you own or plan to own HARP Sci Fi?
Do you own HARP?
Do you own HARP Lite? (it's free)
Do you own any version of Spacemaster, if so, which version? Would you prefer that to HARP Sci Fi?
Do you own Bughunters?
Would you be willing to Co GM?

Any other suggestions or questions?

Are you interested in playing?

yes indeedy

Do you own or plan to own HARP Sci Fi?

Awaiting the final version.

Do you own HARP?

Yes, the core 5 books, though I've been awaiting a chance to play it finally (Conan with TJ will be my first experience playing.)

Do you own HARP Lite? (it's free)

Ayup

Do you own any version of Spacemaster, if so, which version?

SM2 and SM:P All the core books, many of the peripherals and modules.

Would you prefer that to HARP Sci Fi?

Depends on what you intend by "Bughunt". . .if it's high fatality ala "Aliens" or "Starship Troopers" then I'd prefer the game with the least complicated character generation system. (With a proviso, that if you intend to use hand out characters, that point is moot). . .I'd like to expand my HARP experience, so all other factors being equal, I'd prefer HARP.

Do you own Bughunters?

No

Would you be willing to Co GM?

I'd prefer not to, but I'd be willing if you really need one. I will offer you whatever backend support you need.

Any other suggestions or questions?

None I can think of.

Do you own Bughunters?

Would you be willing to Co GM?

yes

Do you own or plan to own HARP Sci Fi?
yes, own it, but didn't read much, yet.

Do you own HARP?
yes, but just started reading

Do you own HARP Lite? (it's free)
yes - it's free

Do you own any version of Spacemaster, if so, which version? Would you prefer that to HARP Sci Fi?
SM2 and SM:P (but not Blaster Law, Future Law)
I know SM2 a little bit better, but won't state firm that I prefer it (just started with HARP rules)

Do you own Bughunters?
No

Would you be willing to Co GM?
And here comes the question: What do you expect from a Co GM ?
The lead of one part of a splitted group ?
Would I be competent enough ? I might need more normal GM experience ...

Not owning Bughunters isn't a disadvantage
Co-GM duties would be pretty light, primarily helping anyone who doesn't own the HARP Sci Fi book create their characters and level up, and possibly describing skills to them.  I.E., if I was running a face to face game it would be the person I usually hand the book to when someone needs something looked up and I don't want to pause the game to do it myself.
I'm actually not really sure if I'll need anyone for that or not, it will primarily depend on the pacing of the game.

Ok, recruiting is by no means over, but with four people interested already I think I'll ask for a section to be created for the game.  Keeping in mind I'm not planning to officially start it until after the holidays, but I would like to start posting some background information about the campaign so people can start thinking about what sort of characters they want to create.

I'll repost this bit in the actual game area when it's created and as I work out the details, but here is a rough idea of how character generation is going to work.

One interesting thing about the setting is that the characters will be clones. Not quite the same as clones in Paranoia though, before anyone starts getting silly  :wizi:

The original donor for the clone could come from any walk of life and any profession, the clones will have some of the memories and skills of the original donor, but will have enhanced physical stats and perhaps Self Discipline.  They will undergoe their Military training.

Part of what I'm doing over the next month is working out details on this but the basic plan is to start characters at third (or perhaps fourth) level

First level you roll up an typical character of pretty much any profession and develop your donor's background.  Your actual donor could be much higher level in their profession but this represents the basic stats and the retained skills and memories that your clone will retain from them.

Second level represents the enhanced stats that are created in the cloning process, so most if not all of your DP's for second level will be spent on your stats, probably restricted to particular ones I will determine.  Possibly I will assign particular Talents to be purchased or given for free at this point too.

Third and possibly fourth level will involve a "change of profession" to a military profession and appropriate skills for that profession can be purchased.

Just a post weekend bump to catch the attention of those that might be interested.  I'd like to get at least two more players for this one.

I've created a new thread for Character Backgrounds if anyone wants to get a start on the history for their character.
(Note, currently my plan is not to include psionics in this campaign, so don't include anything related to that in your background)

So, so far we have four people interested in playing.  Is that enough for this sort of campaign?  I'd prefer to have at least six players but I'm willing to run with four.  Just might have to beef up the squad with some extra NPC grunts

redshirts are often handy for creating terror through fountains of gore.

So, a quick recap, I've got the following Players interested:
Celedor
TJones67
Dranthor
Dax

Everyone except Dranthor has a copy of HARP Sci Fi

Is everyone okay with a start date of early January?
Is someone willing to volunteer to assist Dranthor with Character Generation?
Are the Character Generation notes clear enough or are there any questions about them?
http://www.rpgrm.com/rmsmf/index.php?topic=3333.0

I have a few more background items I can post relating to Character Generation.

And, the big question, are four players enough?

I have HARP, but not Harp sci-fi.

Only 4?

Depends. . . .if you look at it as "100 grunts in the firebase, only you four survived"

or a 4 man LRRP

We are six with Lt. Cannon and Lt. Fodder  ;)

Even if those two die, we are tough enough 4 everything ...

True enough.  And, there always has to be some "know it all" officer type with no real life experience in command who bites it in a suitably gruesome way early on.
