Sunset Isles Calendar
« on: January 16, 2007, 11:45:26 PM »
The year is split into 12 moons of almost 30 days, and 6 seasons.

The winds shift so they come from the southwest, temperatures rise to the 90s.
For two moons it rains almost continuously, with occasional brief breaks near mid-day and mid-night. The rain is steady, with squalls often at dusk. Occasional storms, sometimes dangerously strong ones that last a few days.

Rainy Season: People shelter from the rain, much work is done fixing damage done by the rain, or indoors preparing for planting. Many ceremonies, events and adulthood rites occur in the shelter of the lodges.

The winds shift so they come from almost due west, and the temperature drops to the 80s.
For four moons the day starts foggy, and clears, with light rain at dusk.

Planting Seasion: As things dry out, the island becomes covered in flowers, and clouds of insects swarm. Two moons of repairing damage from the rains, preparing the land, clearing, planting and weeding.

Whale Season: Two moons of Vast migrations of birds, seals and whales pass the island from all points north, heading toward all points south, each in it's own pattern and time, but overlapping. This season sees much hunting done, and a lot of keeping migrating flocks out of the crops. The only place on the island that birds are safe is on the sacred mountain. (Little seal hunting is done, few visit accessable parts of the island anymore, and no Whaling, but the stories told of the hunts of "The old days" are spun, and seem to grow more improbably huge year after year.)

The winds shift so they come from the northwest, and the temperature drops to the 70s.
For two moons the day begins foggy, becoming less and less so as the season progresses, clearing up with no rain at all.

Harvest Season: Flowers begin to become rare, but fruit appear everywhere. Crops are harvested, fruit picked, drying and smoking and storing as a cornicopia offers itself. The Harvest festival is the high point of the season.

The winds shift so they come from the west, temperatures rise to the 80s.
For four moons the day starts foggy, and clears, with light rain at dusk.

Clan Seasion: As the rains return, the island again becomes covered in flowers, though not as much as after the rainy season, and with fewer insects. Two moons of again clearing, planting and weeding. Many long term deals are negotiated and sealed, most marriages occur during this time. (This used to be a time of War, but that pre-dated the imperial colonization, so these stories fit more in the frame of myth and legend. It became the period for clan moots, inter-island meetings and such, those stories are less legendary, but less interesting.)

Bird Season: Two moons of Vast migrations of birds, seals and whales pass the island from all points south, heading toward all points North, each in it's own pattern and time, but overlapping. This season sees much hunting done, and a lot of keeping migrating flocks out of the crops. The only place on the island that birds are safe is on the sacred mountain. The second crop is harvested before the rains come, and the fields prepared as is possible to withstand the rains. (The stories talk of some whaling and seal hunting done in this time, but little, as they are thin, and light on blubber, whatever that is.)

The winds shift so they come from the southwest, temperatures rise to the 90s.
The cycle repeats.
